Background
In the fall of 2008, a group of dedicated citizens began gathering to discuss potential enhancements to the future high school. After a variety of meetings and presentations with the public, and all levels of government and their agencies, the group secured support from the Near North District School Board, several local municipalities, FedNor, and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to commission a feasibility study.
The results of the feasibility study were presented in January 2009 and recommended that future efforts focus on improvements within the existing footprint of the planned school. A committee has since been elected to spearhead fundraising efforts for these enhancements, which are to be used not only by students, but by the community-at-large as well. Indoor and outdoor facilities with public access that focus on a wide variety of sectors (education, training, recreation, fitness, arts, culture) are being considered for priority by the fundraising committee, ACCESS 2011. The committee's first step is to determine what public priorities are for the new facility in order to set its goals.
